Awake in Words: Writing Quest Peru

UPDATE: It's the 21st of June. Our jungle journey has been very very.... beyond words. Very itself. Very myself. Words are lame in this space - and that's from the amazon writer herself!


We raised most of the funds needed for me to be here in Peru and have this incredible healing experience. Thank you all SO MUCH! Now it's almost time to fly home, and I am $350 minimum, short of my needed funding goal. My car is in longterm parking in Chicago, my tank is empty and I put every cent I had into this life-altering Peruvian journey. The last leg is ahead of me.

30 years later, I have landed on GoFundMe to create a place for Spirit, God, the Powers That Be - through you and people like you who are in a position to help - to bridge the distance between Iowa and Peru. The culmination of all my loves, my purpose here, my talents and gifts conjoin on this one trip - what an opportunity! But I'm the rabbit in Alice - I'm late, I'm late for a very important date. I am asking for immediate financial help to get to Peru on June 10th for a 10 day course that will change my life forever. Here's the nutshell:

An opportunity to take a rare and wondrous journey into the Amazon jungle has arrived like a mighty badger, it's teeth sunk deeply into my jugular vein. Even with a list of pragmatic and sane reasons to laugh off such a thing, this creature born of Spirit wont let me go. God is, as usual, the one who is laughing!



I am going to Peru, where skilled leaders and local guides will take us into the jungle to work with master healers in a direct lineage that is many hundreds of years old. We'll relearn trust of our body's knowing, how to scan for dis-ease, to heal ourselves and others without the intrusion and manipulation of Western medicine. It's clearer than my face in the mirror, that my spirit is already there, began this journey months ago, and waits for my body to get there. What a strange and miraculous feeling!

I hear the jungle in my sleep. I see myself covered in the Amazon's healing mud, writing ecstatic poems that are flowing like this mighty river from my hands. This is a rising part of my path, the current hill under my feet: to write this journey into a gorgeous stream of poems, songs and artwork that both chronicle my experiences, and create opportunities for everyone who knows them to heal. Two close friends are also committed to this journey: my musical partner Phoenix Jordan starts her film project there in July, and motivational speaker Stephen Hopson will join me in June. We will have a vast wealth of experience to explore both during and after our travels.

Update: I will also be working with the amazing Angela Mandato on her book, gathering stories and experiences from those who have taken these journeys into the Rain Forest for the most profound healing imaginable. More on this soon!

For those of you who don't know me well, I spent the past 5 years in support of Phoenix Jordan, my partner who was hit by a car in 2009, sustaining a brain injury. It was my time to try and fail. To run into every issue and challenge and belief that I carry. To learn patience, which is really to release judgement. To choose to show up many times a day, year after year. The music we made during that time was instrumental to our healing process, and changed my relationship with music. I've gone farther on my own spiritual path as her care giver, companion and music mate than I would have in lifetimes lived in less intense circumstances. Thank you so much Phoenix Jordan, for the ride of a lifetime! You are a gift and a blessing.

Now we reap the rewards of all that intense growth, depth-charges that collapsed ego and edge to leave me infinitely more accessible, authentic, engaged, real. Although most sacred texts will say that it's not possible to capture the experience of a spiritual awakening in words, Rumi did as fine a job as one man can do. I aspire to see where Spirit is moving at all times - to step into my life immersed in that movement. I am up for the task ~ with your support and a Universe of benevolence under my wings.

Ra's Daughter

Like Venus at midnight,
diamond-bright in the waxing moon's wake,
I am clear of debris,
clear that this quest is my birthday,
my Romeo, a death and a becoming.

Wooed by the impossible in it,
Undulating to it's symphonic swell
That curves like a breast while breathing,
dangles a lifeline as I freely fall,
my spacious heart sprouting the necessary arms
To grab for it and swing like Tarzan
For the highest limb on the highest tree.

I love her for that, my heart...
For her depths that know
Spirit is hoarse from yelling my name!
The earth tremors from the incessant pacing of angels
Waiting for this birth to finally come -
Me, stepping out from all my agreements,
Window-eyed, heart-inclined,
To take my rightful place at the fire.

For now, I am unborn.

I have no lies to furnish,
no crushed, small and trying fingers
To pull into my chest with a shocked whimper.
More cherished than a sleep of forgetting,
I am graced with no trace of fear.

Beloved, mirror me -
The sun is my father!
Awed by this knowing,
still and blessedly hollow,

I am waiting for my orders to be revealed.
