Hey,! I’m Alex, a 24 year old trans man from Middlesbrough, living in London. I’ve been out socially since Nov 2017, wearing binders daily. I’ve now been on hormones since September 2019
Appointments etc are really difficult to attain. I have been on the waiting list for the NHS Gender clinic since September 2018 and still have not seen the NHS Gender clinic due to long waiting lists (25month). I have also been told that I will not get my first initial NHS appointment till at least October 2020.
After that appointment, it is a further wait of around 6 months to a year for hormones and 2/3 year on the waiting list for top surgery.
I was struggling so much waiting for the NHS appointments, becoming so hopeless that I decided I would attempt to go private. I saved the money myself for these appointments and after seeing some amazing doctors along the way, I was diagnosed with gender dysphoria in May 2019.
In September 2019, I started Hormone replacement therapy. I’m so grateful to already be so far into my transition, however my chest dysphoria is extremely crippling. I would like to to raise awareness and support by telling my story and asking for a little support to help raise the funds needed for top surgery.
My original plan was to try for top surgery in the UK under a surgeon in London, however costs would total around £7000, not an easy sum to afford or raise. Alternatively, there is another amazing top surgeon in Poland who does the same surgery, at a lower sum of £4500.
This surgery is crucial to help me feel comfortable in my own skin and even be able to do simple things such as swimming, not having you worry about the anxiety that currently comes with it, finally feeling at ease.
After top surgery, I will be able to give others my old binders, helping others transitioning. I’m fortunate to have a supporting family and friends however some people aren’t as lucky and can’t get access to binders in need to feel comfortable.
Anything will help, whether that’s £1, or even a share!
