Al Weston Baseball Field Dedication

Hazel Park, MI has always had a great history of being a small community, with a great passion for baseball. Over the years, the youth numbers have begun to dwindle, as that passion has hit a bit of a rough patch. We have seen our numbers drop drastically. There was once a time where the city was a thriving baseball community. There was once a time where there were as many as 20 ball fields to be played on. There was once a time where Hazel Park produced Major League Baseball talent. Hazel Park's rich history produced the likes of Bob Welch, Bill Virdon, Joe Roa, and (most importantly to this campaign) Al Weston. Weston was a graduate of Hazel Park High School in 1973. He was an All-State outfielder for the Vikings, providing defense for future Cy Young pitcher, Bob Welch. Al Weston went on to play at MSU, where just a few of his accolades are listed in the links. He was also drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 1977 MLB draft. Throughout the years, Hazel Park has dedicated ball fields to some of our greats. Green Acres Park has named their large diamond in dedication to Bob Welch. They have named the smaller diamond after Joe Roa. Now, it is time to give credit where it is due. We are raising money to give Al Weston his own dedication ceremony. With the funds, we are anticipating renovating the ball field at Scout Park, which is located behind Hazel Park Jr. High. it is our hope to resurface the infield dirt, renovate the dugouts, fix the backstop, improve the bleachers, place foul poles in the outfield, and improve many other facets of the field. When I have spoken with Al about baseball and his time on the field, it's almost like I'm in the 70's reliving his story. He has that passion for baseball that has been missing in Hazel Park recently. I feel that we can band together and recognize greatness, and help to grow baseball in Hazel Park once more.
