From Compton to College|Dominguez AVID

The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program at Dominguez High School in Compton, CA is planning an exciting experience for its students and would like you to be a part of this amazing opportunity.

On April 21st, 2014 we will be sending 50 Sophomores and Juniors on a 3 day Northern California College Tour. We will visit Cal State Stanislaus, St. Mary's College, San Jose State University, Stanford, San Francisco State, UC Berkeley, and UC Merced.  Students will also have the opportunity to experience San Francisco at Twin Peaks and the Fisherman's Wharf. 

The tour fee includes: College visits, College Admissions Workshops, College Tour Representative, Research Booklets, Charter Bus, Meals and Hotel Lodging.

Many of our students lack exposure to the opportunities that are available to them in the world. A number of our AVID participants have only visited areas in Southern California and Mexico. Moreover, 100% of our AVID students are considered low income.

Juliana, a past '12 participant stated, "I'm a child of five, my mother is a single parent, working over 8 hour shifts cleaning and mopping floors. Most families like mine live check per check, struggling to make ends meet each week, paying a trip this costly on their own is out of the realm of reality. Going on this trip would make a huge difference in our lives, letting us experience a world outside of the bounds of Compton." Many of our students have similar stories.
