Amos goes to South Africa

Dear Family and Friends,

My name is Amos Jackson III, I am a Junior Political Science major Community Development minor from West Palm Beach, FL at Howard University. I have been selected to be a 2017 South Africa fellow through the Young AfricanA Leadership Initiative (YAALI). As a YAALI member and fellow, I have the opportunity to travel to Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa this December along with other fellows and professor Dr. Amy Yeboah from Howard University.

The Young AfricanA Leadership Initiative (YAALI) aligns with President Obama’s YALI initiative committed to investing in developing partnerships in Africa. The mission of YAALI is to allow young Africana (African American, Caribbean, and Latin American) student leaders to obtain the skills, research and service learning experiences we need to be global citizens. Through learning, researching, and visiting Africa, the origin of civilization, we gain an educational and enlightening experience.

Throughout my tenure at Howard University I have played football, been apart of student government, and became a brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. , Beta Chapter. The one thing I haven't done that I always wanted to do was study abroad and more so visit Africa. 

As a student at Howard University we are required to take classes tailored to being confident in your blackness and understanding the black diaspora. In addition to that our institution offers trips to travel to the different countries across the African diaspora. 

I would greatly appreciate your support on this journey to the motherland. The trip will be 14 days I will be sure to give you a recap of my experience and send pictures of course.
