A Drink And A Dance: A Short Film

Donation protected
'A Drink & A Dance' is a short film written and directed by Aaron Geldner in association with the Tulane Univeristy Digital Media Production Department. The film follows an unemployed, alcoholic writer as he must navigate through his own drunken fueled, musical themed hallucination while attempting to save his teetering relationship.

Plot Synopsis:
Successful and breadwinning businesswoman Lena comes home on her six year anniversary to find her 26-year-old boyfriend, John, an unemployed alcoholic, passed out on the couch having forgotten entirely about the evening. After she kicks him out, John drinks himself to sleep on the couch of his only two friends from college, Troy and Sam. When John wakes up, he finds countless bottles of empty booze and beer around him, and everything is more colorful and vibrant. John approaches his two friends, cooking breakfast and preparing for work, offering for them to drink with him. To John’s utter confusion, the two burst into a song discussing their daily responsibilities and reiterating that they have no time for day drinking. Not wanting to drink alone, John heads to his favorite dive bar, where conversation with the bartender inspires John to attempt to make amends with Lena. John arrives at his former apartment and for the first time in the musical attempts to sing a song of reconciliation to Lena. Much to his surprise, she joins in, and it becomes a duet, at the end of which the two kiss and everything cuts to black. John wakes up on his friends’ couch, this time for real, realizing that everything he had just experienced was a drunken dream. John bolts off the couch and to Lena’s door. He attempts to sing her the same song from his dream, but he is still unbelievably drunk and stumbles over the words. At the end of the song, she closes the door on him claiming that he will never change.

Director's Statement:
'A Drink & A Dance' is my capstone project for my Digital Media Production degree and will premiere at the Pyrtania Theater in May of 2018.  The idea for the film came from my background in musical theater when I was a child, and my observations of the influence of alcohol upon countless of my undergraduate and postgraduate peers. I am very excited to be able to create my artistic vision and share it with as many people as possible. It is my goal that after its completion, a portion of the funding will go towards submitting 'A Drink & A Dance' to various short film festivals across the world.

Funding:
The vast majority of funding for the film will likely be going towards music. I have already hired a composer, Andrew Weitz, a recent Tulane gradute with a degree in Music Composition. Much of that money will go to finding local professional performers to help us record the music for the film. In addition, we are expecting significant location fees as the script calls for a bar, apartment, house, and public road, all of which will likely need to be paid for.

Casting is November 11th, and we hope to begin principal photography by late January to early February and shoot until late March.

Although $10,000 dollars is a lofty goal, especially for a student production, I truly believe that it will help me create my artistic vision and hopefully will further my future career as a director in the film industry. Thank you all so much, every penny helps.
