2018 Service Trip to Maras, Peru

Donation protected
Several times over the past eight years, the ABLE (Adventure Based Learning Experience ) courses at Delaware Valley Friends School have offered an adventure education trip to Peru. As part of the trip, students grades 9-12 have done service projects in the village of Maras . We have funded and built two greenhouses and painted a school classroom.

In March 2018 our ABLE program will return to Maras to see the fruits of the labor of previous groups and to continue our support of Maras. Our goal this year is to fill the two greenhouses with a supply of seedlings to help the women of Maras grow another season of new trees and fresh vegetables. We will also be painting another classroom in the school.

The work will take place on March 24, 2018, as part of our service and learning trip to Peru. We will share photos from the trip and from our service activity on the ABLE Blog on our website (HERE ).

We would like to raise $500 by March 20, 2018 to help fund the purchase of the seedlings for two greenhouses and for the paint and supplies needed for painting the classroom. In addition to this GoFundMe outreach, our students are holding fundraising activities in school and doing everything they can to raise money. We are grateful for any support you can give to help us fund this project!

PLEASE NOTE: This campaign is not raising funds for Delaware Valley Friends School, and donations are not tax deductible. This is a short-term student-led project of the ABLE Program. Checks are also accepted, made out to DVFS with a notation "ABLE Maras Fund" and mailed to Ken Sinapius c/o Delaware Valley Friends School, 19 East Central Avenue, Paoli, PA 19301.

The Quaker values of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship (S.P.I.C.E.S.) shape the fabric of daily life at our school, and serving others is a central tenet to Quaker philosophy and a key component of a Delaware Valley Friends education. Learn about Maras:
The village of Maras is high up in the sacred valley of the Incas. For hundreds of years the people of Maras grew potatoes and mined salt to sustain their village. Trees were cut and used to heat their homes and cook their food. In recent decades the people of Maras asked for government support to help the village build greenhouses to grow seedling trees for reforestation and vegetables for a balanced diet.  The help didn’t come from the Peruvian government, but a group called "Angels of the Amazon" stepped in to assist. We heard about their efforts and asked them to help us learn how we could support the people of Maras.

You can be a part of this project by giving to the ABLE Maras Fund at DVFS and following the project online.
