I'm the author of the webserial The Gods are Bastards, whose readers I expect are the only people likely to be viewing this page. Those who have followed TGAB and my own comments for several years know by now that I have a long history of dental problems, which have been flaring up during the last few months.
Most of that I was able to take care of with insurance and some help from generous readers. I am currently suffering from a dental infection that came on very suddenly this week, however, and coming as it does at the end of a year in which I have had several dental procedures done, my insurance is mostly used up for the year. My savings are also depleted; I was only able to get the previous root canal I needed done thanks to the support of several fans.
Right now I am taking antibiotics, which are only helping very slowly, and in the meantime suffering constant pain which has prevented me from sleeping at all for three days. I've barely eaten in the same time. Aside from being no fun in and of itself, this has cut into my work; as someone in a creative field, the pain, stress, and especially sleep deprivation are making it impossible to keep up with my writing commitments.
My dentist's office will be closed for the last two weeks of the year, which means I have two weeks in which to scrape up the roughly $530 I'll have to pay out of pocket for the root canal I need and schedule the actual procedure. And obviously, two weeks is a worst case scenario. The longer I'm unable to sleep, eat, or work due to pain, the worse it will be for me and for the serial I need to maintain, as it is my only source of income. My readers have always been wonderfully patient and understanding about problems like this, but I deeply hate to miss my commitments.
The $550 I've requested, to allow for necessary fees, will enable me to get this procedure done and get back to work putting out the regular chapters my readers like to see. It will also mean an end to me hiding in my room, gradually starting to suffer hallucinations due to sleep deprivation. I just want the pain to be gone so I can get a night's rest and resume getting my work done.
It's such a small thing, a tooth, but when it flares up in infection the pain can be all-consuming. It's so easily dealt with, too; the only thing between me and having my life and work back in order is one root canal, and the money necessary to have it done. Until I can get it done, I'm unable to keep working.
