In the UK, about 1,100 young people are admitted to psychiatric hospitals every month.
Sofi and I were among this number.
Together, we set up 'Hope to Heal' to empower young inpatients to get better.
We are using our personal stories to show them that recovery is possible.
Hopefully, our successful battles will inspire other young people to continue in their fight.
It's easy to lose faith while in hospital. You're surrounded by other acutely unwell patients, and their chronic hopelessness is contagious! You're far from the family and friends who inspire you to get better.
And the boredom... people forget to mention the boredom. Time stands still in psychiatric units. Every unfilled minute (and trust me, that's most of them) seems endless. Boredom breeds negative thinking, allowing pessimism to deprive your brain of hope.
To combat this, Sofi and I are launching our first campaign 'Bored on the Ward?' We are sending 'S&S Sensory Boxes' into Child And Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) hospitals in Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex.
These boxes will contain a selection of things to help keep patients distracted and add some sparkle to their day: including fidget toys, hand-creams, colouring books, pens, playing cards, positive notebooks etc.
While such items may sound trivial, we can assure you that sometimes the littlest things make the largest differences.
In the future, we aim to pursue many other projects to help CAMHS inpatients, such as:
- delivering educational talks and workshops;
- providing Christmas presents for patients; and
- a self-soothe sensory scheme.
