I am a single mother raising a teenage son striving to turn my life around. My goal is to complete a Bachelor’s Degree (BA) in Education with a focus in Special Needs.
As an adult, everything I have accomplished has been achieved by setting goals. Now at the age of 46 and in my last stretch of recieving my AAS. This will be my last summer at Tacoma Community College and I have two very time consuming classes. My student loans and financial aide that I recieve in the fall is gone, and I have to find my own means to pay for summer. I was able to find tuition and book money, but I need help with rent since I will be spending over 30 hours a week with my two classes this summer. I am currently working three jobs and it just covers my bills, grocery and gas money.
I am persistent in all my efforts to get my degree, and setbacks rarely dampen my spirits. But summer is the hardest part of the school year. This has been a very challenging year, but I am determined to succeed. I have made some changes in my life so I can be a better parent, and be able to be around when my son needs me. I started a new job at the Salvation Army and I am doing gods work by feeding the hungry. This allows be to be home at night for studies and to be with my son.
Although I have faced multiple financial challenges the last few years, I am still excited to pursue my college education. I know my decision to go back to school is the right one. I also know I’m setting a good example for my son. I do not want to give up. We live modestly, we do not have cable TV or go out to eat, and I have trouble making ends meet without my student loans during the summer.
