Novel Featuring Mental Illness

Donation protected
Greetings to all! My name is Cassie Kelley. I am a young woman with Asperger's Autism and severe Bipolar Disorder. I am interested in dispelling the common myths of mental illness.

The Book

The manuscript is complete. Here is an excerpt from the draft of Session 1: https://filynora.wordpress.com/2018/03/19/excerpt-of-9-ways-to-normal/

I have written a realistic fiction novel that highlights different mental illnesses and neurological issues and the way they translate into, well, life! As you may have guessed, the title of the book is 9 Ways to Normal, which can be self-explanatory, but I'll go into a bit of detail.

The book covers five different mental illnesses and three neurological issues, giving a total of eight different diagnoses. The characters are:

A set of twins with Asperger's Autism, one male and one female

A Bulimic teenager

An Alcoholic

A man with Schizoid Personality

A Schizophrenic

An emergency room doctor with severe, chronic Depression

A young man with extremely severe Bipolar Disorder

And a man with Savant Syndrome.

The Set-up

The book is set up a bit differently than most books, but I think the format works for the story. After a 'chapter' of the group session of the week, there are Point-Of-View (POV) shots of the different characters and how they cope with what went on that day in the session. So it's their own version of "normal."

The Plan

I want the book to be as good as it can be, and if the project goal is achieved, the cost of editing will be covered. The plan for the editing process is as follows:

1) Developmental Edit - A long edit to help me iron out any plot-related or character-related flaws. It provides detailed feedback for my manuscript.

2) Comprehensive Edit - An edit focusing on structure, style and phrasing. It will also provide advice on finding the best form for my story.

And finally 3) Copyedit - This edit picks out typos and grammatical errors that it often takes a trained editor to spot.

After these edits, my manuscript will be ready to become a book that people can enjoy.

I really think that the world could benefit from a book like this. I want to show that normal is relative, and that each person has their own version of it, even those diagnosed with a mental illness. Because of my own diagnoses, my normal is very different than other people's, but it's still normal. At least it is to me. However, I would like to point out, as Zacharias Adams says in my book, "Nobody's normal."
