Greetings from Greensburg High School,
My name is John Pratt and I teach United States History here at Greensburg High School. I would like to introduce you to an event that I host here. It is called Chautauqua.
My next event is April 14 & 15 2020 during the daytime and will be https://www.gchschautauqua.com/ Chautauqua #25 - It is free to teachers/ students from other schools as well as the general public all are encouraged to attend. Times will be released soon. The evening Freedom Celebration event starring Lee Greenwood will be May 7th. I believe in the power of diversity and inspiration and I believe these guests fit that criteria. There still may be an addition/ correction or two. So, what does a senior planetary scientist, best-selling author, Grammy winning musician, a Marvel/ DC comic book writer, a war hero, Indiana sports legends, accomplished international business executive, legendary actor from "Mister Rogers Neighborhood", star of the "Survivor" series and survivor of the 16th Street Birmingham Baptist Church Bombing of 1963 all have in common-CHAUTAUQUA!
100 years ago there was a great inspirational movement that swept through the country, and it was called Chautauqua. Great speakers, musicians, and performers would travel the country, primarily in small towns, providing culture and uplifting unique opportunities. The Greensburg Chautauqua once hosted Helen Keller and William Jennings Bryan. The Burney Chautauqua hosted John Phillips Sousa. Teddy Roosevelt called Chautauqua “the most American thing about America”. Sadly, the Great Depression brought an end to the movement.
When I became a teacher, I felt there was something missing. One thing had changed for sure since I walked the hallways as a student, and that was the increased emphasis on standardized testing. I also noticed a void, which was a little old fashioned inspiration. As I reflected on what I could do for my students to fill the void, I looked no further than Chautauqua. So could I provide my students with inspirational speakers from around the world with an extremely limited budget? After hosting 24 Chautauqua’s, the answer is yes. A significant reason is because of donors like you.
Since our first event at Chautauqua, we have hosted such dignitaries as actors Mike Farrell and Ed Asner, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Ron Rosser, Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee, and so many more.
What a wonderful way to make a difference in your hometown, by making a donation to Greensburg High School Chautauqua.
