A few weeks ago, our little buddy Jackson (who is 6) began experiencing headaches and occasionally throwing up. Upon being seen in Emergency at the Stollery (local Children’s Hospital) it was decided to do a CT Scan straight away. This imaging showed a mass the size of a mandarin orange at the base of Jackson’s brain.
What devastating news for Jackson and his family! Interventions happened very quickly and on July 16, Jackson underwent a 7 hour surgery to remove the mass.
Biopsy results revealed Medulloblastoma - a cancerous (malignant) brain tumour. Jackson’s Oncology team have proposed that the best treatment is Proton radiation. This is only offered at a few sites in the USA. It is a more specific type of radiation than what is available in Canada. It allows for more precise radiation of the brain tissue and spinal cord decreasing the harmful effects of radiation on surrounding tissues and organs; therefore, lessening side effects and deficits down the road for Jackson. Marko and Ashlee are awaiting approval from Alberta Health Services - if approved one parent will be funded to fly with Jack to the states. He will undergo 33 radiation treatments in a 8 week window. He’ll then return home and undergo Chemotherapy for an undetermined length of time.
It is our hope that we can raise money to assist in keeping Marko, Ashlee, Jackson and Kaitlyn together as much as possible during his treatment. Also, they will be responsible for all the day to day costs and accommodations. Both Marko and Ashlee will be away from full time jobs. Any amount you are able to give will help to support them financially and will lessen the burden they are faced with. This is just the beginning of a long road to recovery for Jackson. He has already shown amazing strength and bravery. He truly is a little SUPERHERO and will kick this!
