This upcoming September I will be entering a Franciscan religious order called the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. The Franciscans are a group in the Catholic Church that try to follow in the footsteps of Saint Francis of Assisi, in living the Gospel and serving the poor.
The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal are a group of men dedicated to prayer, fraternal life, living poverty and serving the poor. They are based in New York City, and live in many of the poorest areas of the city. Check em' out here!
I was first exposed to this religious order 8 years ago when my college went to New York for a mission trip. We stayed with the friars, and I was immediately impressed by their joy, love of the poor, and radical way of life. For the past 2 years I've been living in Honduras doing mission work with a group called the Missioners of Christ. We serve the poorest of the poor in Comayagua, Honduras, and help people to grow in their Catholic faith.
The Franciscan Friars have a house in our neighborhood, so I've had the chance to work with them and learn more about their life.
So after staying with them several times, I feel that God is calling me to dedicate myself to following Jesus by a life of poverty and serving the poor with the Franciscans! I will be entering on September 5, but there is one obstacle. I can't enter with any student loans - so I need to raise $14,000 to pay off my student debt. I did work after graduating, but I have had no income for the past 2 years as a missionary in Honduras, and I have no way of paying this off.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! I am so excited at the prospect of giving my life to God and the poor. It would be such a blessing to me if you could help make this a reality!
