The Future Dr. Waples!

*** Update: It's hard for me to even believe it, but I am now more than one month into medical school--part of the Class of 2019 at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn! They say learning in med school is like attempting to drink from a fire hose...all true. And along with the deluge of information I am tasked with retaining, there are a slew of textbooks, licensing test materials, medical equipment and other accessory items I need to aquire to eventually become Dr. Waples. I have only been successful thus far thanks to the generosity of others... Your contribution at any level will be a blessing. Below is my original campaign description which illustrates what motivates me to be Dr. Waples! ***

Dear Supporter,

In 2010 I lost my grandfather (pictured above) to Leukemia, and the last words I shared with him minutes before he passed were, "Thank you, Pop-Pop, for always teaching me what you know."  That night, as I grieved, I could hear his words of encouragement: "You can do anything, Erica!"  I thought, "Yes, I can!"  And that same night I committed myself to pursue my childhood dream of becoming a physician.

Five years later, I have successfully completed my post baccaulareate premedical program while maintaining a 3.7 GPA.  The entire time I worked to support myself, and I even took on volunteering at Mount Sinai's Icahn School of Medicine, as an intern in the Emergency Medicine Research Training Program. I shadowed an emergency doctor in the ER, and I sought advice through informational interviews with 10 physicians from a range of specialties.  I earned a good score on the MCAT, submitted 20 applications, and travelled to 5 interviews! And for the past year, I have gained priceless experience as a full-time Clinical Research Coordinator at Mt. Sinai in the emergency medicine department.

The time has now arrived for me to start medical school, and I need your help with taking care of the many medical school expenses.

I embarked on this journey after 10 years of working in the nonprofit sectors with social justice organizations.  When I was a young premed entering Yale, I thought doctors were limited to helping one person at a time. I wanted to help whole communities and I decided to seek out a career dedicated to service and social change at mission-based organizations.

However, it was while I was completing my Master's degree in nonprofit management at NYU that I began seeing many examples of doctors helping whole communities.  Doctors were engaging in advocacy, policy development, and health care administration.  I know that my love for science, and the strong people skills I have developed from my nonprofit career, position me to be an effective and impactful physician--one who improves the health of individuals and whole communities.

I humbly request your partnership in acheiving my goal by making a donation towards my medical school expenses.

Thank you for your time and consideration.  If you would like to know more about my preparation for medical school, or if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at thewaples (at) me (dot) com.
