Help for Jack

My brother Jack is one of the sweetest, kindest and most generous people anyone would be lucky to know.

On August 30, 2017 Jack was rushed by air ambulance from Jasper, Alberta to the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton.

Worried co-workers had gone to check on him, and found him in his apartment closer to death than we will ever know. He had written a goodbye letter to my sister and me.

Upon arriving at the hospital in Edmonton, an emergency tracheotomy was performed. Doctors soon discovered that Jack had a very large, very aggressive, cancerous, mass on his larynx. Because of the tumour, Jack had been unable to eat and had lost about 50 lbs. He was fitted with a gastro tube, taught how to take care of his trach and g-tube and in less than 2 weeks was sent home to live with our sister.

At the onset of the emergency we discovered that Jack's health care coverage had been cancelled by Alberta Health Services a number of years ago - we have not been able to deterime WHY this happened, but we do know his previous a
Alberta health care number still showed up in their records under his name. But they would not reactivate it. I even emailed both Premier Rachel Notley and Minister of Health Sarah Hoffman, but neither chose to help us out.

Alberta Health insisted that instead of reinstating his coverage at this crucial time, we had to reapply for his health care coverage. Jack was born in Quebec, and had no official government ID so we had to go through all the hoops of reapplying and waiting for Jack's documentation to come in.

It took three long months to get all the documentation in place, in the order required, by the heartless bureaucratic machine we call Alberta Health. Three months that they chose to delay a most critical surgery needed to save my brothers life.

The surgical team finally performed a full laryngectomy of Nov 23, 2017.

Our last visit to the Cross Cancer Institute (January 26, 2017) was extremely disappointing. Results of a CAT scan from 3 weeks ago show 10 extremely small nodules have formed in his lungs. As well, the nerve damage in his face caused by the surgery has gotten worse, to the point where he is unable to eat again. His weight is down to 106 lbs., and he is living on a diet of tube fed ISO Source and drinking Ensure.

The Cross Cancer Institute is arranging another CAT scan to see if there is any other reason for Jack's facial pain, ie. another tumour or simply nerve pain.

He also has to go for bother CAT scan in three months to see if the nodules in his lungs are.increasing in size.

I (big sister Hazel Shearer) has a meeting on Monday to find out what can be done in regards to medical cannabis. My understanding is it is going to be fairly expensive, with a ballpark figure of $1000 for two months worth of cannabis oil.

This gofundme campaign is to ask for help to cover the costs of CBD oil with appropriate levels of THC for cancer treatment.

Please help me and my sister, help my brother. If you would like more information, or if you would like to send my brother Jack a few words of love, hope and encouragement, I will pass them along to him.

Thank you from the very depths of our beings
