Help Us Help Mark - Medical Bills, etc.

Donation protected
On Sunday, April 13, 2014 Cadet Mark Herbert Jr. of the Wake County Sheriff’s Department Class #22 was in a very serious life changing motor vehicle accident. Although Mark’s injuries were not life threatening, everything is different and he has since been diagnosed with a complete spinal cord injury which has left him paralyzed from about the mid-waist down. He underwent a 6 hour back surgery to stabilize his spine with a titanium rod and to reattach several detached ribs, which he is still recovering from. The surgery was to fix his back but we were told at the time that it probably was not going to fix his paralysis. This is no doubt a devastating injury for anyone, at the young age of 24 he has learned to do many basic daily functions that eventually will all become routine for him, but for now it’s all a challenge. Mark is strong both mentally and physically and is really killing it in physical therapy as well as breaking down barriers and obstacles on a daily basis. He’s truly amazing and determined to walk again! Mark’s two biggest supporters are his girlfriend Lauren Mueller and his mom Lorrie Cowan Myers, who have been by his side since day one and we can’t forget their dog Shelby, who they desperately want to reunite with as soon as possible! Mark has surrounded himself with an amazing support group through close friends and family.  Mark, Vicky and Kate Herbert, Steve Myers and Nancy & Bob Gamble just to name a few.   We can't thank everyone that has reached out to Mark enough for being a part of his life.

Mark has had an amazing attitude since the very beginning of this journey and has faced every single challenge with such bravery. But now Mark is faced with a few situations that he needs help with, such as mounting medical bills, the equipment necessary for him to relearn how to drive an automobile, purchasing a good reliable car that doesn’t need much maintenance as well as his new wheelchair. Mark’s disability insurance is due to end in early September (some of which was graciously donated by other cadets in the academy) at which point he will be returning to the Wake County Sheriff’s Department to work. With that, he will need to be driving himself to work, so he will need to learn how to drive again without his legs.

We are asking for your assistance to Help Us Help Mark make some of these obstacles a little easier for him. No amount is too small, and every little bit helps. We ask that you share this with your friends and family in hopes that they will contribute as well.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 in two months, we can do this! Let’s get it done…

Good health and happiness to you all!
