Depression and Suicide Awareness

Tax deductible
I lay in bed at night, snuggled up in my duvet covers, thinking about the brand new update for my favorite video game tomorrow! I set my timer to wake up right as the update comes out, I say goodnight to my parents then secretly look at all the new information about it.

My mom walks in and says, “Go to bed Annie! It’s almost 12:00 AM!”

I sigh and say “Okay, sorry!”

In a dramatic voice. She takes my IPad and walks out. I slowly fall asleep and dream piecefully.

Meanwhile, a girl named Jessie at only 14 lays in bed thinking about the next way to self-injure herself, scared and afraid of opening her feelings to her family. She sets her timer for the next time to hurt herself when her family won’t know.

She says, “Goodnight Mom! Night Dad.”

They ask, “ Are you okay Jessie?”

She thinks,  No everything hurts, I’m dying inside, I feel like crying, no one understands, I wanna die.

She finally says, “Yes, I’m OK.”

Then, she secretly hops out of bed hurting herself again, her Dad walks in and sees her on the ground. He walks over to help her up in disbelief, he slowly asks,

“Did you do this?”

She nods her head trying to not open up, trying not to cry. He helps Jessie up and get back to bed. Jessie’s pain got worse and worse to the point were Jessie attempted suicide. A year after that she attempted once again. “After the second suicide attempt, Steve, (Jessie’s Dad) was sitting by Jessie’s hospital bedside and remembers her saying,                                                                                                         “Dad, I’m ready to embrace treatment, I need help.” ( Families for Depression Awareness)

Sadly, not just Jessie struggles with depression, 264 million people of all ages suffer from depression, and even worse, not all people like Jessie advocate themselves to seek help.

Depression is a significant problem today with important causes and effects that need to be understood; we can combat the silence by focusing on maintaining health, whether that’s exercising, medicine or simply positive thoughts; One organization that is fighting successfully against depression is the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
