Bosnia Flood Relief

Donation protected
Dear friends,

I am a Bosnian-American professor of political science, living and teaching in the United States. As you might have already heard, my homeland, Bosnia and Herzegovina has experienced floods of Biblical proportions last week. These are the worst floods that the region has known since they began keeping records 120 years ago.

Bosnia does not have "home insurance" or "flood insurance", there is no government assistance, and now, there is no food, no shelter, and no income!

Roughly 1.3 million people have been affected, about 500,000 people have left their homes, and at least 95,000 homes are without power. Over 1 million people have been cut off from clean water supplies. Landslides have moved land mines leftover from the wars in the 1990s, estimated to be as many as 120,000.

There is a great shortage of everything but the most immediate concern is for babies and their mothers. There is danger of infection in the coming days as water supplies have been contaminated and entire villages have lost their livestock. Naturally occuring anthrax is a major threat to both humans and animals, while scabies and West Nile virus have already been reported.

Your money will be used to purchase:
1. drinking water,
2. infant formula and diapers
3. canned food/bread/flour
4. cleaning supplies
5. hygienic products

Money raised will be spent ONLY on purchasing these supplies, NOT on salaries, overheads, or office space. I am asking you for a donation of any size. I will post pictures of all purchased supplies, all expenses, and provide pictures of activities.

I am hopeful that by reaching out, I can help collect funds on a behalf of a group of volunteers in the city of Mostar, my hometown. They have already made a number of deliveries including baby food and supplies provided by my family and I. They are my friends and I will personally transfer funds, and pay for all transfer fees.

My dear friend Tajma Dziho-Vrazalica from Mostar (seen in both pictures here) was handing out food and supplies today in Maglaj, one of the hardest hit towns, when an elderly man asked her for some bread. She ran out of food, so she gave him what she had - her own lunch. She knew she could get a meal once she got home, some 150 miles away, but this elderly man might not get anything for days.

I am asking you: can you do without that Starbucks coffee today, or a bag of candy?  Your $5 can buy 5 liters of water and 2lb of flour. That is all it takes to save a life right now. Please donate. Please don't let Bosnia be forgotten again.

Thank you so much.

With much gratitude and appreciation,

Lana Obradovic-Candler, PhD.
