Sky Schindler, from St Croix in the US Virgin Islands, was in a bad car accident on the night of Friday January 18, 2019. On Saturday Jan 17, she was airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida. She sustained multiple injuries including a fractured collarbone, pelvis and lacerations about her body and face.
As of Sunday Jan 20, Sky has had the first of at least three surgeries to address her injuries. The first surgery was to remove glass from her abdomen. She will need additional surgery to repair her collarbone and pelvis.
Sky will be in a wheelchair for 2-3 months and cannot use her legs or right arm while healing. Following this, she will be on crutches and in physical therapy for several months while she regains her strength and mobility. She has a long and challenging road to recovery.
As a bartender and server on St Croix, Sky's ability to move is her only means of income. She won't be able to work again for at best many, many months. Like many on the island, Sky doesn't have health insurance to cover this kind of catastrophic event.
If you've been to downtown Christiansted, you've likely come across Sky's sweet smile behind the bar at Shupe's or Common Cents Pub or maybe she's served you your favorite pizza or pasta at Un Amore. Raised on St Croix, her family has a long history on the island and her father Kurt Schindler is a well know musician.
Sky's mother, Janelle, is with her in Miami and as a family, they are facing a terrible financial burden with medical costs and months of rehabilitation ahead. If you know Janelle at all, you know that she has spent the past 20 years on St Croix organizing fundraising events for worthy causes, raising tens of thousands of dollars for the environment, animals, and community members. For the past year, Janelle has been working as a Community Recovery Coordinator with FEMA helping those affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria and assisting with rebuilding our islands. Now is the time for our community to give back and help her family.
Funds raised through this campaign will assist her in paying her medical bills and every day needs. Monies will be transferred directly to Sky's bank account.
