Kim's Recovery and Journey Home.
My name is Kimberly Sanders and I am 59 years old. In April 2017, I suffered a freak accident and fell in my home and as a result, lost my leg. Unbeknownst to me, a blood clot had been forming in my leg and it broke loose, causing my knee to give out. I live alone and was alone when the accident occurred. Although I struggled and fought hard to get up, I was unable to move or get help. I was found three days later, exhausted and near death. Unfortunately, the damage to my leg had been done and the blood flow to the right leg had been cut off. After two hospitals, an ICU stay and several unsuccessful surgeries to try to save the leg, nothing could be done to repair the damages. I lost my leg and am currently undergoing rehabilitation and physical therapy.
Over the past several years I have faced some health issues, but nothing as traumatic as this. Like most people, I never thought something like this could happen to me. It has been difficult, but despite the numerous challenges and thanks to the love and support of my wonderful family and friends, I am progressing well with my recovery and keeping my spirits up as best I can. My friends and family have been by my side throughout this ordeal. I have always been independent and strong willed (some would say stubborn to a fault perhaps) and I am determined to continue to live independently and to eventually return to my home. Home is where the heart is and like most independent people I can’t imagine any other future at the moment.
At this time, I am facing not only physical challenges but drastic financial issues as well. Up until the accident I was working two jobs to make ends meet during these challenging times. Although I have been blessed and granted short term disability, the income does not begin to cover the cost of many medical necessities that are surprisingly not covered by insurance; such as making modifications to my home to meet my physical needs. I am currently in a wheelchair, but hope to one day be able to “graduate” to, and use, a prosthetic limb. I am told that in order to return to my home, many rooms and areas need to be made ADA accessible so that I will be able to live safely and comfortably in the house I have called home for some twenty years. The estimated cost for the modifications is over $100,000. Needless to say, I am not able to afford the work that needs to be done, or the cost of staying at the rehabilitation center while the work is completed. In addition, once home, I will need some home care and assistance as I adapt to my “new normal.” It is very difficult for me to ask for help, it always has been. But now I need to reach out for assistance and rely on the kindness of strangers in many ways. As difficult as it is to say, I need all the help I can get if I am to go home. For the past two months, I have been in hospitals, ICU, surgeries and rehab centers and can’t wait until I am able to go home.
If possible, please help me get home. Even the smallest amount would mean so much and be greatly appreciated – please spread the word.
