Support Luis for art residency

Introduction:

My name is Luis Sahagun I am excited to announce that I have been offered an artist residency located in Oaxaca, Mexico! The Artist-in-Residency program, Arquetopia is run entirely by artist. The program is orientated towards social consciousness projects and their mission is to promote social transformation through art. I will arrive to Oaxaca, Mexico on June 2, 2014 and will return July 1, 2014.

About me:

I am currently a graduate student at Northern Illinois University. As an artist I am an embodiment of a lower middle class undocumented worker made American citizen artist. I use my cultural inheritance of hard work and the will to succeed as my motivation for my artwork. For more information about me and my art work please visit www.Luissahagun.com

(why) Help me:

As a college student my financial circumstance has burden me with limited resources to completely fund the project that I will be working on in Oaxaca. I am asking for your help and support to raise money for art supplies, travel expenses, food, and public transportation costs. Your contributions are essential for my artistic project to succeed.

In recompense to your monetary contribution you will receive original artwork!

Please take a look at the video to see my cardboard series process!!!!

About the project:

I plan to continue developing my cardboard paintings series in Oaxaca Mexico. In this series of work I will habitually collect cardboard from a nearby mercado (outdoor market). Once I gather all the material, I will begin to meticulously stack and adhere the cardboard together. After the gluing has concluded I will use my power tools to deconstruct and disfigure the form. I believe that beauty and solemnity emerges through destruction. Deliberate cuts, tears, and slices are made to the surface with an additional goal being to develop a history that encapsulates and uncovers the materials physicality.

My goal in Oaxaca is to learn from local master artists how to prepare and use natural pigments derived from local plants. I plan to use this dying/painting technique on my cardboard series. I also plan on visiting archeological sites such as Monte Alban in order further connect with a historical context of ancient civilizations and cultural traditions.
