On Friday evening, Tucker underwent emergency Colic surgery at the New Bolton Center to remove a benign tumor that had coiled around almost 6 feet of his small intestine causing a blockage. Tucker had no prior symptoms and thanks to the rapid response of the team at Brandywine Equine and New Bolton Center as well as his owner, Denise O’Connor, Tucker successfully made it through the surgery and is now recovering comfortably.
As a lesson horse for the past 14 years, Tucker is 20 years young and in great condition. Tucker’s fans are far and wide as he carried many a young and adult rider on his back planting the seed for the love of riding and horses. It was obvious to his team of doctors and those that know him, that he deserved a chance to live out his retirement with his best pasture mate, Ben.
Sadly, most horses that have dedicated their lives in service are not considered beyond their usefulness. Denise made a decision that when she retired to care for her elderly mother, she would not turn her back on the lesson horses that had served her and so many their entire lives. Their fate would not be like most working equines; neglect or unnecessary euthanasia would not be a fair exchange for a lifetime of service.
