Help The Sykes Family Fight Cancer

Donation protected
The last 12 months have been both enormously rewarding and incredibly challenging for our dear friend Larry and his wife Caren. The birth of their son and Larry’s cancer diagnosis have put tremendous emotional and financial strain on the family.

In August 2016, Larry and Caren received the joyous news that Caren was pregnant with their first child. Around that time Larry developed a mild cough, which he attributed to allergies he had experienced during the summer in past years. By late November his cough had grown persistent, and when Larry visited his family doctor, a chest Xray and CT scan revealed a tangerine-sized mass in his right lung.

A subsequent bronchoscopy confirmed Larry and Caren’s worst fears—at the age of 59, Larry was diagnosed with Stage 3B lung cancer (adenocarcinoma). In addition to the large mass found in Larry’s right lung, the cancer had spread to lymph nodes on both the right and left sides of the trachea. In January, Larry commenced an aggressive eight-week chemotherapy regimen, the goal of which was to shrink the large mass to an extent that the cancer could be attacked with a combination of radiation and chemotherapy.

On March 20, 2017, one week after his final chemotherapy treatment, Caren and Larry were blessed with the birth of Grant Paul Sykes, a beautiful, healthy baby boy.

In April, Larry began another treatment regimen consisting of another eight chemotherapy sessions and 35 radiation treatments. Larry completed those treatments in June, and for the past two months, he and Caren and Grant have been anxiously awaiting the next PT scan, which will take place on August 29.

Because of the side effects of the treatments, Larry has been unable to work since February and we’re not sure when he will be able to return to work. Social support services are insufficient to cover living expenses, and their financial cushion is nearly gone.

The Sykes family are grateful for your love and support. Please consider helping Larry, Caren, and Grant during their time of need. Any amount will help alleviate the financial pressure they are feeling. We ask that you continue to pray for them and the journey they are on. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. God bless all.
