Hello Family & Friends!
My name is Alexander James Henry. I am a 19 year old sophomore college student from Las Vegas, NV. Currently, I am a Business-Entrepreurship major at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA. As an aspiring entrepreneur, I plan to use my time in college as an opportunity to gain the knowledge and experience to be able to successfully own and operate my own business in the future. I have always believed that one of the most invaluable characterstics of a successful entrepreneur is his or her ability to place themselves in foreign environments, allowing themselves to grow physically, mentally and emotionally.
This Fall, my university has offered me the extroadinary opportunity to travel to and study in the one of the World's main and largest cultural hubs, Madrid, Spain. I am one of the only males, let alone African American males, to be accepted into Loyola Marymount's most competitive study abroad program. To be able to travel, while simulatenously expanding my mind through the complete immersion of a foreign culture is a dream come true. It is something that only a very small percentage of young African American students get to experience during their lifetime. During my time in Spain, I plan to increase my level of Spanish profiency to use it as a tool to explore and experience first-hand, the unique culture that Spain has to offer. Studying in Spain gives me the once in a lifetime opportunity to humbly receive invaluable life-lessons during some of the most pivotal and developmental years of my life (college years). I plan to use these lessons and experiences as an aid in becoming the best world citizen that I can. While abroad, another student and I will be documenting our entire experience to create an end-documentary that showcases the several different cultures that both Spain and the rest of Europe have to offer. We plan to use it as an opportunity to illustrate how important it is for people to get out of their comfort zone and see the rest of the world while they are still young. Understanding a different way of life can have an immense amount of benefits in the development of one's character. As one of my favorite quotes states, "traveling is the only thing that you can buy and come out richer."
Unfortunately, this program is not free :(. In order for me to experience all of the wonderful things mentioned above, I have to come up with over $25,000. Luckily, I have a great financial aid package and incredible parents that help cover a large portion of it, but sadly, not all of it. This summer, I plan on working very hard at both my job and internship to be able to pay for transportation costs, but I cannot afford much past that. I sit here today humbly asking for any level of monetary help that I can get. Any and all amounts of money help, no matter how small or large it is.
