Making Dyke Soccer Sustainable

Donation protected
Dyke Soccer  was founded in April 2018 by Jolie Signorile and Alex Schmidt, two old friends who became lovers while creating this league. Our central mission is to make health and wellness accessible for queer womxn, trans, gender nonconforming, non binary, and questioning people. Soccer is the medium. Safe physical fitness spaces are rare for queer folks and we advocate for inclusive culture wherever we play. What began as a flirty 1v1 has grown into a community of over 3,000 players and their fans, who meet weekly to play pickup in NY (Bedstuy and South Brooklyn), LA, and DC.

We aim to be MORE INCLUSIVE THAN COOL. We are built in response to a closed or homogenous culture that accompanies many teams. Dyke Soccer is a community built around cruising, connections, and sport free from focus on substance and profit. We’re a pop-up dyke bar in your local park: sub the booze for a soccer ball. Meetups in each city are bottom-lined by different members, with captaining shifting from week to week.

As we create space and resources for our community we recognize that we are situated within broader social contexts of inequality and injustice and we can share effort and resources toward counteracting these.

Through petitioning and in-person discussions, Dyke Soccer helped organized the YMCA in Bedstuy to put up trans and genderqueer inclusive bathroom signs. Dyke Soccer has raised and donated over $2000 to local LGBTQ, prison abolitionist, and migrant relief organizations such as Black + Pink NYC and Annunciation House.  Dyke Soccer has been featured in DAZED, Office Magazine, and Elite Daily.

WHAT WILL THE MONEY BE USED FOR?

While this growth has been exciting, this project is now too large to run sustainably on volunteer efforts alone.  Along with gear, field rental, and one time costs for structuring Dyke Soccer for long term success, our goal 2020 budget will start paying our teammates for their labor on this project, beginning with a Part Time Director, Chapter Organizers, an Outreach Committee, and a Communications Team.

For all paid leadership/work opportunities, we will prioritize hiring trans/gnc/nb people and people of color. All of the opportunities below will be open to all, regardless of whether you contribute or not.

If we surpass our budget, extra funds will be used in keeping with our values  . This might mean (for example) holding a free youth clinic in Bed Stuy, sponsoring a chapter in a city or town with fewer resources than NYC, LA, or DC, or adding more paid positions.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I GIVE?

Generally, the cost per pick up is $10/person. Dyke Soccer operates on a sliding scale: all pickups are accessible to all players, regardless of contribution. If you give $100, you’ve just supported 10 pickups for someone who cannot contribute financially.
