Cameron's Artistic Endeavors

Hello all! My name is Cameron Fillingame and I am currently a Sophmore in the Contemporary Dance Program at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
I remember two years ago sitting in a darkened auditorium, watching my classmates perform in UNCSA's 2012 Spring Dance Performance and wondering how a performance with no spoken words could make me feel so vulnerable and human. I sat in my chair with my head in my hands, knowing then and there that more than anything else in my life, I wanted to become a dancer. I NEEDED to become a dancer, because I felt that if I could not perform and effect people the way my classmates had done, I had no desire to perform at all. Soon after, I auditioned for UNCSA's Contemporary Dance program having never taken a dance class prior to the audition and having no technique whatsoever. All I knew was that I desired to move, and my faculty believed that was all it took. Two years later, I've been given the opportunity to perform in works by choreographers from around the world such as Daniel Gwirtzman, Merce Cunningham, Brenda Daniels, Ranko Bogosavac, UNCSA Student Choreographers, and Shen Wei Dance Arts. Last Summer, I was even asked to perform in a collaborative process between UNCSA students and Cirque Du Soleil as both an actor and dancer. It has been a journey that has thrown many obstacles in my path, but through it I am not only learning how to become a better performer but human being as well. Today, I continue to rigorously train each day to become all that I can be and thirst to soak up all the knowledge the world has to offer me about my passion.

This Summer, I plan to continue to train for my art by attending the American Dance Festival's Six Week Summer Intensive in Durham, North Carolina. The ADF program is world renown, providing unique training to students from all countries and offering classes by highly skilled, professional dancers. Students are given an incredible amount of responsibility by being asked to attend classes and rehearsals from as early as eight in the morning to as late as ten at night. The ADF program also gives students a chance to see professional company repertoire every week of the intensive, while also having some major companies set repertory work on select students. By attending this intensive I would gain invaluable training from some of the world's leading contemporary companies, make life-long connections with international dancers, and above all, learn more about what it means to become an artist. However, the cost for such extraordinary training and opportunity is steep, and I am currently trying everything in my power to attend. I am now turning to friends and family, asking that if any are able, to please help support my artistic endeavors by making a small contribution towards my tuition and living expenses. Every little bit counts! Through your contribution you would be enabling me to reach new heights as an artist, allowing me to train harder than ever before, and helping me make priceless connections in the professional world. These expenses add up to the following:

Tuition fees: 1000 dollars
Six-Week Apartment rental: 600 dollars
Meals and transportation: 400 dollars

Thank you so much for investing your time to read about my passion, and should you be willing to aid me in this process, rest assured that you would truly be making dreams become a reality.
