I lost my right leg above the knee in 1998. In that time I've managed to adapt pretty well to my new robot-life, but there are some things that need to adapt to me-- specifically cars.
Because I am without my right leg I use my left leg to drive. This is MUCH easier with a left foot accelerator. In the past I've had one installed in my car, but since I don't currently own a car now I want to purchase a portable left foot accelerator to use in rental cars and my city's car share program (and eventually in my own car).
The PLFA costs around $500. As you can see, my goal is a bit higher than that. I will put this extra money towards a car of my own.
Here's a nice list of how your donations will be helping me:
- a portable left foot accelerator will allow me to drive more than one car, so I will be able to take full advantage of the car share program in Philly
- this will come in handy when I need to go grocery shopping, get to appointments across town, or go to job interviews
- easier access to a vehicle will allow me to extend my job search radius and hopefully land myself a better job
- which is where purchasing my own car will be helpful
I've been managing alright in Philly without a car but there are times when I have to relying on others for rides, which I don't want to do anymore. A PLFA would allow me to be more mobile and more independent.
Some more context for anyone seeing this who doesn't fall into the friends & family camp, I am a Philadelpha based educator and I've had a hell of a time finding a job here after graduate school. I love Philly, though, and I don't want to leave. Right now I work with kids part time, which is why I need this fundraiser. A car would have a hugely postivie impact on my ability to advance my career. A lot of job, even in the city, want you to have a car and I don't want that to be what's holding me back.
In addition to teaching kids how to be cool I am a storyteller and comedian and only abou 50% of my material has to do with my experiences as an amputee. I also think I coined the phrase "amputeacher."
I just want everyone to know that I really, really appreciate all the support and I feel super fortunate to have such great friends and family!
