Liberation Through Education

Donation protected
LTE is a Non Government Organisation setup with the aim of providing basic education to children who have no access to school as schooling is not free in Liberia. LTE is based in Monrovia the capital of Liberia. we have so far run four programs and helped over 120 children. All of our projects are run by donations.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO LIBERIA

Liberia is based in the west coast of Africa, covering a land mass of 43,000m2. It has a population of roughly 4.7 million people with over a million of the population living in the country’s capital Monrovia. Around 2.3 million people are illiterate and over half a million children have no access to school. Monrovia is littered with slum communities, West Point being the largest of which, housing roughly 75,000 people.

Nearly 300,000 refugees and internally displaced people returned to their homes in 2005 after the end of a brutal 14-year civil war, people who are being failed by the lack of resources and support available through the social services.

· More than a third of the population, live on less than $1 a day, an issue that affects children more frequently than adults.

· Liberia’s infant mortality rates remain among the highest in the world and sees more than 15 per cent of children die before reaching their first birthday.

· An estimated 230,000 children have been orphaned through armed conflict, HIV/AIDS and other diseases have.

INTENTION

It is our belief that attaining literacy and arithmetic skills will not only empower people, but also enable them to make more informed choices, which in turn affords them more mobility. With more autonomy over their lives, people will have a greater chance to elevate themselves and improve their situations.

As part of my effort to support the most vulnerable and at-risk in Liberia I constructed a social centre in an urban area close to Monrovia. The funds for the project came from my own pocket and the construction took roughly 8 months. With sourcing of local materials and through the use of local tradesmen during construction, we were able to offer some support to those struggling to find work.
AIM

LTE tries to offer a safe environment for children to be able to spend time without straying towards undesirable activities such as gang violence and begging both of which are prevalent in Monrovia. Our aim is that the program will be as inexpensive as possible, with participants contributing around [phone redacted] Liberian dollars (£5-£10) for a whole three month project as a signature of commitment to the program. This money will go towards providing students with snacks and refreshments during their time at our club.

WHAT WE HOPE TO ACHIEVE

Any donations will go towards:

• Exercise books/text books

• Stationary

• Equipment

• Tutoring fees

• Promotional activities to reach out to the most in need students

Any help given by anyone will be truly appreciated. This is a chance to give to a project that will truly go to the people, every last cent of it. We all know how different our lives are compared to our brothers and sisters from Africa, so lets do all we can to reach out and make others lives more prospers.
