My name is Britain Eakin. I'm just finishing up two Masters degrees in Journalism and Middle Eastern & North African Studies at the University of Arizona. I am currently a part-time radio reporter at Arizona Public Media and an Apprentice at the Arizona Daily Star with the investigative team.
I was recently selected for a very competitive internship with the Investigative Reporting Workshop through the School of Communication at American University in Washington D.C. Although the internship is paid, it won't be enough to cover my living expenses while there. Without a bit of extra assistance, I won't be able to take advantage of this incredible opportunity.
In the past year I've grown extremely interested in investigative journalism, and was fortunate to take part in the recent Arizona Daily Star investigation State of Confusion: Tracking SB1070. The project sought to evaluate the impact of Arizona's controversial immigration legislation. I have since been working on building my data journalism skills so that I can pursue investigative journalism as a career path.
The internship with the Investigative Reporting Workshop will go a very long way towards helping me fulfil that goal. It is my hope that the professional connections I make and the projects I work on will lead me to full-time employment doing journalism that is both important and impactful.
I am trying to raise only enough money to assist with my living expenses and airfare. The small salary I make as an intern should cover the rest. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated.
