Hello everyone,
My name is Katelyn Miller. I am 15 years old and a sophomore at Wisconsin School for the Deaf (WSD). Before, I started at WSD, I went to Spring Green Elementry School until 4th grade. WSD has taught me so many different and cool things. I feel like it is the best school for me because it really submerges me in the deaf community and culture. I love the deaf (and hearing) teachers... AND the students too. Transferring to WSD was a hard decision for my family but it was the right decision for us! It is 2 hours from home and we make it work. I feel like WSD is my second home and my extended family.
Every summer, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) hosts a national youth leadership camp in the woods of Stayton, Oregon called the NAD Youth Leadership Camp (NAD YLC). The camp chooses only 64 young deaf and hard of hearing Americans from a large pool of high school students nationwide. I was recently honored when NAD YLC selected me to attend their month-long program of intensive leadership development training.
During NAD YLC, campers focus on self-awareness, interacting with leaders in the deaf and hard of hearing community. Throughout the month, we will develop a lifelong network of friends who will support each other for the rest of our lives. An integral part of NAD YLC is educating campers about deaf heritage and culture, along with essential skills to succeed such as writing and public speaking.
The NAD Youth Leadership Camp is truly a total package. However, any great program costs money. I am responsible to pay $1,800 for my camp tuition, along with airfare to and from camp and spending money.
I hope that you will consider supporting my decision to attend this program. I am an excellent student with a grade point average of 3.5 at Wisconsin School for the Deaf. I am active in sports (volleyball, basketball and track and field), and I am currently a member of my school's Junior NAD chapter, ASL Club, Drama Club, Star Club, Academic Bowl and the Sign Song Dancers.
The NAD Youth Leadership Camp will benefit me tremendously, both in my high school career and in my future! Please consider helping me reach my goal to attend this unique and exciting camp by donating today!
