Onyx’s Road to Recovery

 My best friend Onyx (8 year old German shepherd) had to be taken in as a emergency case because she was not acting like herself. She is my best friend and has been through everything with me and I can’t imagine life without her. She is a tough girl and I want her back to her old self. There are a lot of things unknown with her journey to getting healthy again but we are treating her for IMHA at the moment.

The name of the disease says it all. In pets affected by IMHA the immune system begins to destroy (hemolyze) the animal’s own red blood cells, resulting in anemia.

In IMHA the pet’s antibodies begin to attack the red blood cells in the bloodstream. These cells become coated with antibody, targeting them for destruction. The body then lyses, or pops, these red blood cells, removing them from circulation.

Because red blood cells are important for transporting oxygen throughout the body, when a pet has too few red blood cells, he or she essentially becomes oxygen-deprived. The spleen and liver, which normally help to clean up old red blood cells, also become overwhelmed.

She is currently on ten different medications and has been hospitalized three days with fluids. She is taking meds to help her appetite loss, to stimulate appetite, anti diarrhea, and meds for a upper respiratory issue she also has in addition to all her other issues. 

I am not asking for much for much but my dog means so much to me and for my birthday I would like her to be healthy, that’s all I want!
