My name is KaMara and I am a high school freshman at the Academy for Advances Studies. I am currently at the top of my class with a 4.0 GPA. I'm on the JV and Varsity Basketball Team. I play the piano and love to sing!
My mother is always trying to find creative ways to keep me and my brothers busy throughout the summer. So, this year I decided I would beat her to it and start looking for summer enrichment programs that I would actually enjoy. During my search, I became aware of The Smith Summer Science and Engineering Program (SSEP). SSEP is a four-week residential program for exceptional young women with strong interests in science, engineering and medicine. Each July, select high school students from across the country and abroad come to Smith College to do hands-on research with Smith faculty in the life and physical sciences and in engineering. SSEP only accepts approximately 100 girls. Since its inception, nearly 1,800 high school students have participated, representing 46 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and 53 other countries.
I gathered all the required documents (application, recommendation letters, and transcript) and applied for the program, specifically for medicine. I was selected out of a highly competitive application pool. I received the acceptance email and was very excited!! When I applied for the program, I also applied for financial aid. However, because of the limited amount of financial aid available, I received a partial scholarship of the tuition. Unfortunately, I still need $2, 500 to cover the remaining balance and travel related expenses.
I would love to attend this program at Smith College because it would allow me to gain a global perspective of the ins and outs of medicine, in which I consider pursuing a career in Anesthesiology. This program is the rigorous and enriching program I need to better myself, and in turn my community.
I ask that you please help me so that I will be able to attend this program from July 6, 2014 to August 2, 2014. Every dollar counts, so please donate.
