Hi, I’m Cristian Mercado, from Long Island, New York. Growing up here made it easy to get involved with athletics which led me to the amazing sport of lacrosse. I started when I was 6 years old and have been playing ever since. From school teams, to local leagues, to travel teams, lacrosse was and still is my world. It’s given me great opportunities like recently being recruited to play Division 1 lacrosse at Wagner College here in NY, where I have committed to start in September. So when I had the chance to try out for the new U19 Puerto Rico National Lacrosse Team I didn’t hesitate. I was lucky enough to make the final 25-player roster as an attack man and will get to help spread the game of lacrosse to Puerto Rico. With this also comes the opportunity to play in the World Lacrosse Championships in Ireland in July 2020. It’s a dream come true!
To see this through I need your help. There are a lot of expenses and each player is required to fundraise. Traveling to Puerto Rico and other places for practice and then making the journey to Ireland for the championship is really expensive. My goal is to raise $7500 to help cover the costs for my dream to represent our beautiful island…La Isla del Encanto. I’m excited since I get to combine 2 of the most important aspects of my life: lacrosse and my heritage. Being Puerto Rican is a special part of who I am. Having grandparents who were born in Puerto Rico has given me an understanding of what the culture is like. I have a strong sense of family and enjoy many types of food, music and lifestyle things that are so much a part of Puerto Rican culture. I’m super excited to represent my ancestors and help shape mine and future generations for all that has yet to come.
So whether you’re Boricua, a lover of all things Puerto Rican, or a lover of the game, I hope you’ll become part of this incredible journey with me to put Puerto Rico and lacrosse on the international sports arena.
