Sara’s fight against cancer

My cousin Sara (14 yo) is from Serbia and had already a tough life for her young age. 2019 she suffered from lymphoma (malignant tumor) and later she also suffered from leukemia. In June 2020 she recovered and was able to return to her home in Serbia. Sadly, on the 27th of July the doctors discovered that she‘s suffering again from leukemia. She returned back to Brussels on the 9th of August in order to start therapy. For now she‘s having chemotherapy until the end of September. By this time they‘ll have to check if the therapy is working or if she needs a stem cell donation. For now she needs to stay at least 8 months in the hospital. Her parents need to rent an accommodation due to the fact, that they can‘t stay with Sara in the hospital. The costs for the accommodation are around 1100€ per month. As a consequence, a treatment, helping her to recover is only possible in Brussels, but is very expensive. The therapy will cost around 200.000 - 300.000€. In Serbia people don’t earn as much as people do in other countries of the European Union, which leads to the fact that Sara’s parents have to face the difficulty not being able to pay this treatment, treatment that is absolutely essential for Sara’s recovery. Ma cousine Sara (14 ans) est originaire de Serbie et a déjà eu une vie difficile pour son jeune âge. En 2019, elle a souffert d'un lymphome (tumeur maligne) et plus tard, elle a également souffert d'une leucémie. En juin 2020, elle s'est rétablie et a pu retourner chez elle en Serbie. Malheureusement, le 27 juillet, les médecins ont découvert qu'elle souffrait à nouveau d'une leucémie. Elle est retournée à Bruxelles le 9 août afin de commencer la thérapie. Pour l'instant, elle suit une chimiothérapie jusqu'à la fin du mois de septembre. D'ici là, ils devront vérifier si la thérapie fonctionne ou si elle a besoin d'un don de cellules souches. Pour l'instant, elle doit rester au moins huit mois à l'hôpital. Ses parents doivent louer un logement parce qu'ils ne peuvent pas rester avec Sara à l'hôpital. Le coût de ce logement est d'environ 1100€ par mois. Par conséquent, un traitement qui l'aide à se rétablir n'est possible qu'à Bruxelles, mais il est très coûteux. La thérapie coûtera environ 200 000 à 300 000 €. En Serbie, les gens ne gagnent pas autant que dans les autres pays de l'Union européenne, ce qui fait que les parents de Sara doivent faire face à la difficulté de ne pas pouvoir payer ce traitement, qui est absolument essentiel pour la guérison de Sara. Meine Cousine Sara (14 Jahre) kommt aus Serbien und hatte für ihr junges Alter schon ein schweres Leben. 2019 erkrankte sie an einem Lymphom (bösartiger Tumor) und später auch an Leukämie. Im Juni 2020 erholte sie sich und konnte in ihr Heimatland Serbien zurückkehren. Leider stellten die Ärzte am 27. Juli fest, dass sie erneut an Leukämie erkrankt ist. Sie kehrte am 19. August nach Brüssel zurück, um mit der Therapie zu beginnen. Vorerst bekommt sie bis Ende September eine Chemotherapie. Bis dahin muss geprüft werden, ob die Therapie anschlägt oder ob sie eine Stammzellenspende benötigt. Bis dahin muss sie mindestens 8 Monate im Krankenhaus bleiben. Ihre Eltern müssen eine Unterkunft mieten, da sie nicht bei Sara im Krankenhaus bleiben können. Die Kosten für die Unterkunft belaufen sich auf etwa 1100 € pro Monat. Eine Behandlung, die ihr helfen soll, wieder gesund zu werden, ist daher nur in Brüssel möglich, aber sehr teuer. Die Therapie wird etwa 200.000 - 300.000 € kosten. In Serbien verdienen die Menschen nicht so viel wie in anderen Ländern der Europäischen Union, was dazu führt, dass Saras Eltern nicht in der Lage sind, diese Behandlung zu bezahlen, die für Saras Genesung absolut notwendig ist.
