GO FUND ME: Emergency Relief Funds For Lebanon
Two deadly explosions in Lebanon’s port capital of Beirut on August 4th, 2020 have left over 200 people dead and more than 5,000 wounded - numbers which are expected to rise as search and rescue efforts intensify. The blasts which registered as a magnitude 3.3 earthquake leveled a greater part of Beirut and were felt 240km away in Cyprus.
With 300,000+ people displaced and homeless, hospitals overwhelmed and in dire need of assistance, the Lebanese cabinet has declared a two-week state of emergency.
The Lebanese cabinet estimates that losses may reach upwards of US$10 billion dollars. So far, the Lebanese government has availed 100 billion Lebanese pounds (US$63 million) to deal with the immediate crisis. But has requested help from the international community.
International Response
Messages of condolence have flooded in from every corner of the globe. However, what’s actually needed on the ground is aid and relief. France was one of the first countries to send two planeloads of specialists, rescue workers, and supplies on Wednesday.
Britain has committed to providing a US$6.6 million aid package including search and rescue help and expert medical support.
Russia flew in a mobile hospital complete with 50 emergency workers and medical personnel. Three more flights are expected to arrive before Friday 8 August loaded with corona virus testing supplies, protective gear, and other relief equipment.
