Hi Everyone,
Thank you so much to everyone who has donated clothing and money this past year to Girls4Girls and Helderberg Rape Crisis Centre. I can’t thank you enough and begin to express how much this means to me!
I had the chance to visit the centre again in February while I was in South Africa and bring a G4G Monetary donation as well as clothing donations for the shop. While I got the update that the centre and girls were doing well at the time (the centre having even just received a new paint job) this past week we received some devastating news. Ruth Madito, the social worker and project coordinator for the Lwandle township office who we worked with last year unexpectedly passed away. Ruth was a selfless, carrying and beautiful woman who worked tirelessly to make sure the survivors always had the support they needed, the true backbone of Lwandle outreach. The community of Helderberg has suffered a true loss of a mother figure, hero and angel. Ruth will be deeply missed by the women she worked with, Girls4Girls included.
During this difficult time the centre needs our support more than ever! We are throwing a bar fundraiser on Sunday, May 15th at 303 Columbia in Gastown, with all proceeds going to the Helderberg Rape Crisis Centre. https://www.facebook.com/events/692069980903710/

Hi Everyone!
My name is Sarah Scali and I'm the new Director of Fundraising for Girls4Girls Charity!
Girls4Girls is a registered non-profit organization that through various initiatives, aims to empower girls locally and globally. Girls4Girls mission is to establish partnerships with organizations that share a common goal of empowering women through various means, awakening and strengthening the potential of these women, championing them to grow emotionally, physically, intellectually, and economically. Girls4Girls envisions a world in which girls and women have equal access to education, health care, legal protection, rights and career opportunities; a world in which girls and women possess a high self-esteem, inner strength, confidence and courage to dream, as well as the tools and resources necessary to make the pursuit of those dreams a reality.
Our current projects include the Helderberg Rape Crisis Centre in Cape Town, South Africa, the centre for whom I have started this fundraising page! The Centre is attached to the main hospital and offers assistance to victims of sexual assault ranging in age from young children to women in their 80's.
Through leadership training and hands on support, our aim is to provide the staff and victims of sexual assault with tools and resources to empower themselves, and the financial assistance to run the center. Rather than a hand out, we wish to sustainably support these women with a hand up. None of the work that G4G continues to do can be done without the love, support and generosity of our local community.
The Centre sees hundreds of women a year and could not offer them the medication, counseling or legal assistance needed without financial support. It only costs $40/year for one woman to receive the medication, counseling, education and/or legal assistance they need at the Centre.
In late April, 7 Board Members, a group of UBC Students will be traveling to Cape Town to support, work with, learn from and share the stories of the woman and young girls who have been empowered at the Helderberg Centre. We are also partners in a documentary series called Global Sorority; a film that aims to give a voice to girls around the world who struggle and conquer challenges and inequalities. The film has already begun its documentary of sharing stories of women around the world and will include the work that we do in South Africa in April. Furthermore, Global Sorority, The Passion Foundations and Girls4Girls will be bringing the "Elements of Success" Leadership Education Program to the Helderberg Clinic's survirors of sexual violence.
I'm so excited to be a part of this initiative and want to help in any way that I can. I will be traveling with the Board of Directors to South Africa in April and hope to raise as much money as possible for this worthwhile cause, so please, join me in this initiative if you can!
