2014 Jabberwock Cotillion

Donation protected
I am Dayna Downs and I am competing in the Ms. Jabberwock program sponsored by the Washington DC Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. This is a scholarship program that will culminate in the 2014 Jabberwock Cotillion Program on May 18, 2014. The year-long program provides participants various cultural, educational, service and social activities, as well as the opportunity to showcase their gifts and talents. The culminating Cotillion will celebrate our growth and development, as well as provide us with the opportunity to win a scholarship with your support and assistance. The theme is "Reflections of Radiance".

As a little background, I am a high school senior at Woodrow Wilson High School and will graduate in June 2014 from the SciMaTech Academy. I plan to attend college in August and have currently been accepted to five colleges or universities; and I am blessed to have several options from which to choose. An important determining factor will be the cost of financing my education and I really need your support in this competition to help me achieve my goals.

I am a leader among my peers "“ having held an elected office every year throughout high school. I was class president my freshman and sophomore years and class vice-president my Junior and Senior years. I belong to Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ where I participate in the dance ministry and help with the children's programs during church. I have advocated for our environment over the last two years as a leader in an inter-faith group called Inter-faith Youth for Climate Justice. I also work against under-age drinking and smoking through participation in the National Capital Coalition for the Prevention of Underage Drinking. Through this group I educate other teens of the dangers of cigarettes and alcohol and accompany police officers to various businesses and restaurant establishments to ensure that they do not sell these items to youth.
I hope to study anatomy, biological science or physical therapy In college. Through this program and your support, I am sure I will succeed and continue to help others in the community.

What is a Jabberwock Cotillion?

In "Alice in Wonderland", the "Jabberwock" was a mythical, magical character who called together the members of the kingdom each year for the purpose of putting on a show. Add to that, "Cotillion," a "formal ball", often the venue for presenting debutantes after learning proper social behaviors, and the result is a Jabberwock Cotillion. Jabberwock is also a major fund-raising initiative for the Washington DC Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Through the fund-raising efforts of the Jabberwock, the sorority is able to provide scholarships to the participants and other deserving students in the DC Metropolitan area.
