Jake's Handicap Accessible Bathroom

Who is Jake?

Jake Bower is our 10 year old boy with Congenital Muscular Dystrophy.  He is developmentally delayed and his mental capacity currently scores as a 12 month old.   He's an epileptic and has IOL implants.  You can learn more about Jake at his website, www.JakeJunction.com!

Why do we need your help?

After 8 years of use, his wheelchair needed to be replaced.  His mother and I work to provide for him and have excellent insurance.  We've received his new wheelchair, but it will not fit in the bathroom.  Jake is now 52" and is hitting his head on the ends of the bathtub.

We have a bathchair that can go over the toilet.  It also doubles as a chair in the shower.  However, it will not fit through the door to the bathroom.  Even if it did, we have a bathub.

How can you help?

We need to remodel the bathroom so that the wheelchair and bathchair will fit through the doorway.  A closet that forms the hallway to the bathroom needs to be removed so that the current 24" door can be replaced with a 36" door.  The bathtub will need to be removed and a walk-in shower installed to replace it.  Thus, making the bathroom handicap accessible.  A walk-in shower requires the drain to be located in the center of the shower floor creating significant additional cost.

The estimate is $10,000.  Please consider donating, we'd greatly appreciate it!
