Culinary Historians of Canada

The Culinary Historians of Canada is seeking your support!

CHC was founded in 1994 to inspire appreciation of Canada's food history, which is a vital part of our shared national heritage. Today, our website receives about 20,000 visits per month. Our Facebook page is an active community of nearly 5,000 people, and our monthly e-newsletter goes out to hundreds more.

In 2021, through the contributions of about 25 volunteers, we:
  • Held a Jewish Passover cooking class
  • Created a video series highlighting diverse winter holiday traditions
  • Published a Victorian Christmas baking video with a matching recipe booklet
  • Launched a project to collect and document food memories from Ontario seniors
  • Sponsored two major national events: Taste Canada's Hall of Fame, which celebrates the stars of Canadian food writing and the Heritage Jam and Pickling competitions at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair

Why do we need your help?

When COVID hit, we realized we could pivot and present most of our programs online. But we now have expenses for digital tools like Zoom that we never used before. Also, without in-person events, we lost an important source of revenue and new members.

We want to keep offering digital content to the whole world, but to keep up with expenses as we phase back to in-person programs, we need your help. We hope to raise a one-time amount of $3,000 to help with our operating costs. That amount would cover both our national sponsorships for this year plus $500 for fees for digital apps.

If you love butter tarts and Nanaimo bars, or Halifax donairs, and Montreal bagels or traditional Indigenous bannock, if you love old Canadian recipes, you know how important our food history is.

Please contribute to our campaign! Every donation over $30 will receive a one-year membership to the Culinary Historians that lasts until fall 2023. (Two years for donations over $55.)

Thanks, on behalf of our volunteer team!
