Jessica's summer internship to Uganda

Friends and Family,

As many of you know, I have gone back to school and am pursing a bachelor's in nursing at Denver School of Nursing. I joined Global Health Perspectives (GHP) to enhance my learning and understanding of local and global health issues. As part of being a member we attend meetings that focus on global health issues such as poverty, access to clean water, hurdles non-profits have in helping these communities, and also volunteering in the community. I have volunteered with many organizations: Habitat for Humanity, Denver Rescue Mission as well as Chip and I providing pet therapy to Developmental Pathways a few times a month. One of my fellow classmates, Miranda Foust, and I organized a supply drive for Ronald McDonald House, which we collected well over $300 in cleaning supplies. Miranda is also one of the four going to Uganda.

As a member of GHP I had a chance to apply for an internship in Uganda in June, 2014. This is a very competitive process and only 4 students out of more than 30 were chosen to go, myself being one! And now have a wonderful opportunity to travel to Uganda for an internship focusing on public health and putting to use the nursing skills and knowledge I have gained through the last 9 months. As part of the internship we are required to acquire skills in fundraising in order to cover the cost as well as any extra raised going towards the non-profit organization that we will be working with to support our efforts in Uganda. We will be partnering with The Mango Project. They have been working in the very rural and remote Northwest corner of Uganda for the past 11 years. The cofounders of The Mango Project are Micah and Avery Hughes whom are also faculty at Denver School of Nursing and will personally lead our GHP internship. You can read more about The Mango Project at http://themangoproject.com . During this internship my fellow students and I will assist in community needs assessment as well as cross-sectional health screening to provide local Ugandan leaders with updated information on areas of most severe malnutrition and disease etiology.

I am so excited and honored to be one of four students to go on this service learning internship to Uganda. All funds raised will go for flights, housing, and medical outreach supplies. My goal is to raise $3500 by May 5. No monies go towards salaries. Every dollar counts!

I will keep all of you updated with what I am doing and learning up till departure for Uganda as well as after.

Please help me in my endeavor in pursuing this once in a life time opportunity!
