July 2022
Larry and Julie received some devastating news last week. Larry’s cancer is still spreading, and he can’t physically be treated with any more medication to fight it. He has been set up with hospice at home, so he can be more comfortable & close to his family. As word has gotten out, a number of people have asked about this page wanting to help, so we thought we would update the page. Please keep this special family in your prayers during this very difficult time.

September 2020
Just over a month ago my good friend Julie’s husband Larry was given some very scary news, he was diagnosed with stage 3 throat cancer. Larry Rooney is a hard-working husband and father, dedicated co-worker and one of the most loyal friends. While the prognosis is encouraging, there is most certainly a physical, financial, and emotional strain on him and his family.

Larry was scheduled to start radiation and chemotherapy treatments on Monday, September 14th. The plan changed suddenly when the tumor in his throat began bleeding. On Saturday, Sept 12th, Larry was admitted to Brigham & Women’s Hospital. He was immediately brought into the operating room, where he was intubated and put on a ventilator. Due to complications Larry remained sedated for 4 days. On Wednesday, after multiple scans and procedures, he was extubated. He was brought out of sedation, but unfortunately took some time to wake up. On Saturday, Sept 19th, Larry was discharged and able to go home.

With that scary week behind him, Larry started radiation and chemotherapy a week later than originally scheduled. He will be at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, 5 days per week, for several weeks. The treatment is aggressive and is anticipated to cause some harsh side effects. Due to the recent hospital stay, as well as the upcoming treatments, Larry has had to take a leave of absence from his job. At the same time, Julie, his wife, has been by his side, keeping the home running, taking care of their 2 kids (Gavin-12, Maggie-10), while also taking Larry to his many appointments. She too has had to take some time off as a Special Education Teachers Aide at an elementary school. Even though Larry and Julie are fighters, the stress of missing work, transportation expenses, prescription costs, and doctors’ bills that will begin to arrive shortly, are enough to cause even the strongest to need help.

As friends of Larry and Julie, we want to help alleviate some of the financial strain their family is going to experience. Any donation is appreciated and will help the family to continue “normal” life, as much as possible. Even if you are unable to help financially, please keep this special family in your prayers, and wish them strength and healing during this very difficult time.
