On February 9th a relatively normal evening took a quick and drastic turn. What followed included Shawn falling and having a seizure, a trip to the emergency room by ambulance, and a trip to the University of Kansas Medical Center by helicopter.

The first cat scan showed that there was something occurring inside of the brain and a biopsy would need to be performed to determine what was occurring and causing him to have seizures. For the next few days Shawn was seen by a barrage of specialists and had to be heavily sedated to minimize the seizure activity and brain swelling. After the biopsy was performed he was able to have the breathing tube removed and was slowly brought out from a heavy sedation. A few seizures continued to persist at that time.

While awaiting the biopsy results, it was determined that he would need to go to an inpatient facility for rehab to regain strength. On February 17th, he left KUMC for Via Christi-Pittsburg for intensive inpatient rehabilitation. The seizures continued off and on and medications were adjusted to ensure that things were progressing like his medical team was wanting. While still at Via Christi Shawn and Mendy went back to KUMC to get the results of the biopsy.

On February 27th, Shawn was diagnosed with a grade II primary brain tumor. It was determined that the type of tumor is an oligodendroglioma. This type of tumor accounts for approximately 4% of primary brain tumors. At the appointment it was determined that Shawn would need intensive radiation therapy consisting of 30 radiation sessions at KUMC coupled with an oral form of chemotherapy consisting of daily treatment for six weeks followed up by a tapered dosage lasting a year. The radiation sessions began last week and will require Shawn and Mendy to be in Kansas City Monday through Friday for the next five weeks./>/>
