Almost 40 years ago I got mugged and shot in the back. Although the bullet damaged some of the nerves in my legs, I was able to lead a more or less normal and productive life for the next 37 years. However, the gunshot apparently weakened my kidneys, and combined with several medical misadventures (a toxic to the kidneys blood pressure medication, an extremely toxic to the kidneys MRI dye test and the last straw, a heavy dose of unnecessary antibiotics), my kidneys gave up and quit two years ago. Other than that, I appear to be in good health. And if the kidneys were to get fixed I potentially have many years of good health ahead of me.
Unfortunately, the only treatment for kidney failure in America is to go on dialysis for the rest of one's very much shortened life. And that's definitely no fun. However, in Mexico and other countries there are stem cell treatments available which work to reverse kidney damage in a fairly short time and allow a person to lead a normal life again.
The trouble is that it will cost about $10,000 which includes 10 days worth of dialysis in Mexico and the cost of someone to help me on the trip, and insurance won't cover any of the cost. I cannot work due to the kidney failure and am living on Social Security. As a result I cannot put aside any money on that income and am thus reduced to asking friends for donations to save my life.
