In the first weeks of 2013, Adam Schoenfarber, a 27 year old social worker, was diagnosed with a rare type of bone cancer and began, with the help of his friends and family, the long journey through surgery toward health and wellness. Mixoid Chondrosarcoma, the cancer he fought, afflicts fewer than 1000 new people each year and at present does not respond to any chemotherapy or radiation therapy treatments. This leaves incredibly invasive surgery as the only effective intervention at this time. As Adam, learned how to walk again, his family and their friends formed an informal yet closely knit support group and email chain, Team Tangerine.

This group, named for, the original estimation of size of the tumor and the color associated with the yogic Sacral chakra (The primary location of Adam's cancer), was devoted to providing creative support to one another through months of hospital and doctor's visits. However, they wanted to do more than support ourselves. Team Tangerine's mission is to provide comfort to people diagnosed with rare cancers as well as their families by supporting innovative research and development of community based resources.
In 2013, we raised more than 12,000 dollars for research into Chondrosarcoma, a rare, aggressive and undertreated form of bone cancer. In 2014, Team Tangerine would like to double that! Team Tangerine working on plans for several events: a snowsports race day, a golf and tennis tournament, and a story telling partnership to support other families who are battling their own treatments. All profits from these donations and those events will be awarded to innovative researchers working on underfunded or new research into rare cancers.
At present, we have not been approved as a 501(c)3 but have submitted our application and hope for review in mid-2014.
