Who we are.
This campaign is on behalf of youth development charity Adventure Under Sail. Based in the UK, we operate the tall ship Pelican - one of only 5 Class A tall ships left in the UK for sail training.
TS Pelican is a stunning ship and a real part of the UK's rich maritime heritage. She was completed in 2007 in Portland and since then has taken hundreds of young people on life-changing training voyages in order to:
- help them gain employability skills, such as teamwork, leadership, communication and problem solving.
- help their personal development, including increasing self confidence, self discipline, motivation, time management, adapting to a new enviroment, etc.
- help their emotional development, so that they are better at meeting new people, more polite, and more out-going.
Where we are.
TS Pelican, like any piece of machinery, is getting old and worn. She has sailed throughout the UK, Europe, and as far as the Caribbean in the last 8 years and she's in need of a refit.
What we need.
Amongst other things, TS Pelican desperately needs a new engine. But this is no mean feat! An engine and gearbox costs around £30,000, plus we then have to take the ship to dry dock, fit the engine, and do other vital work to her. We hope to do this in February and March 2016.
All of the money raised will put towards the cost of our new engine, enabling us to continue operating the ship and helping many more young people to develop on board.
