On October 27, 2010, our family lost our oldest son, Allen, to suicide. We were left heartbroken, lost, and trying to pick up the pieces of our shattered lives. Without truly knowing what to do, we opened an Allen Matthew Barber Memorial Fund in lieu of flowers to enable us time to think about what we could do with any funds we received. Well, we were overwhelmed by everyone's generosity!! We used EVERY penny we received over the next 3 1/2 years to give to causes we thought Allen would like. We gave to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation, our church, Daphne United Methodist Church for the handbell fund, a regional theatre, a suicide prevention walk in Spanish Fort, and many more. What we are most proud of is that we started the Allen Matthew Barber Memorial Fine Arts Scholarship. We have given away a $1,500 and a $1,000 scholarship the last two years to deserving future fine art majors attending Daphne High School, Allen's alma mater. However, our funds have now been depleted and we are asking for your help once again. We have now changed the Memorial Fund into simply a Memorial Scholarship Fund. We would like to be able to give a scholarship every year as long as we are living in this community. With your help, we can help keep Allen's legacy alive and at the same time, help a deserving student continue his or her education and one day fulfill their dream that Allen was unable to see.
