Carlos Chan- Cocom was a hard working immigrant, from Akil, in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. He sought a better life for himself and pursued it, in San Francisco, California.
He worked two intense job, often thankless jobs, one as a dishwasher, in a busy fine dining restaurant, and the other as a busy lunch cook. Jobs that no one else would do. And he did them with a smile.
Immersing himself in the restaurant industry, he taught himself to speak English, had been promoted from dishwasher to the front of house, and was a star player at whatever he did.
His positive and calm presence brought comfort to everyone he worked with.
Early Friday morning, after finishing a long work days, Carlos and his brother,
standing in front of their apartment, their home, unprovoked, were shot multiple times.
Carlos died, he was just 33 years old.

His brother remains in critical condition at the San Francisco General Hospital.
Carlos was as kind as a human being can be. He sent money home to his family in the Yucatan and dreamt of returning their to open his own restaurant. We have no doubt it would have been successful.
His family is in the process of returning Carlos home, to be buried, and struggling with mounting medical bills, as his brother clings to life in the ICU.
Hard working immigrants, like these men, are the beating heart of the hospitality industry.

For those of you that do not know me, my name is Charlotte Randolph, I am a partner in Californios Restaurant, where Carlos worked. I am raising funds on the family's behalf. They reached out to me the day of the incident and I have been working closely with the family to help organize arrangements. The money received from this campaign will help relieve many problems that the family face:
Getting Carlos' brother Elmer home from the hospital and stable. He will be out of work for quite some time.
Helping pay for travel related costs/ family members missing work, skipping the much needed paychecks.
They would also like to move apartments, understandable considering the circumstances.
The money will be divided among Carlos' siblings. They intend to use it for the above reasons.
