High School Archaeology Excavation

Donation protected
The Essentials:
I am using GoFundMe to help cover the cost of food, housing, and museums for high school students participating in the pilot season of an archaeological field school high school program at Poggio Civitate Archaeological Project in conjunction with Regis Jesuit High School. Your support will help make the program more affordable for the students participating, reducing the cost from $4,000 per student to almost $2,000 per student.

My name is Andrew Carroll, I am a Latin teacher at Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado and staff member of the Poggio Civitate Archaeological Project. I am the teacher spearheading this new project for high school students who have few oppurtunities in Italy to work on archaeological sites.

Why: To expose high school students to the fields of archaeology, ancient history, and modern Italian culture.
When: June 19-July 3
Who: 4 High School Students

The hope will be to expand the program in the future to allow more students to participate. That will only be possible with your help.

The Full Explanation:
This program would take place from June 19 through July 3, 2014. Starting during the 2014 summer excavation season, I will take four students to Vescovado di Murlo to work at Poggio Civitate, a pre-Roman settlement dating from the 7th to the mid-6th century BCE 25 kilometers south of Siena, Italy.

We will spend the first four and half days of the program visiting museums and archaeological parks in Tuscany at Chiusi, Florence, Siena, and Grosseto to become familiar with the Etruscan civilization and the material culture of this area.

The following week I will instruct the students how to excavate in the field alongside the regular field school team as they learn proper archaeological excavation techniques. The final day will be spent visiting major archaeological sites in Rome to provide a broader historical context of the area.

This program is designed to expose students to the field of archaeology by immersing them in the ancient history and modern culture of Italy. By both visiting and working at historical sites these students will gain an appreciation for the Etruscan civilizations, an important part of the history of the early Mediterranean basin.

As a major trading partner with the Greeks and a major influence on Roman architecture, religion, and politics, the Etruscans provide an excellent introduction to the topics of Classical history.

I am particularly excited to be instituting this program because of the way it will inspire students to study Classical history. As a high school student, I went on a school sponsored trip to Italy with my Latin class, and it was through this experience that I was inspired to continue to study Classics throughout my undergraduate and graduate educations.

Before that trip I had never been inspired by the Latin language, but by visiting archaeological sites, combining the study of this immense history with my language skills became an exciting endeavor.

It is my hope that through my current position as a high school Latin teacher, I can provide students with this same opportunity to become truly engrossed in such an enthralling and interesting subject as the Etruscans.

This program will also offer myself and the other chaperone the unique chance to teach students outside of the classroom, while also growing in our own personal goals. It is rare for an opportunity for a high school teacher to both teach students and direct their field excavations. I am excited to take advantage of this opportunity for the advancement of my own career as both a field archaeologist and as an educator.

I look forward to the first summer of this program, introducing my students to the Classical world which has given me so many opportunities to learn and grow, and for many more years of the program to come.
