On February 26th, Stephen, his wife Nicole, and their 8 year old daughter, Sydney, were returning home, when a car crossed the center lane and hit them head-on. It took EMS more than an hour to free Stephen from the car. All three family members were flown in helicopters to trauma hospitals in Louisville, more than 50 miles away.
The list of their injuries is long and severe: Sydney has 8 fractured vertebrae in her spine and will be in a brace for several months. Stephen has 2 broken femurs, a fractured pelvis and splintered head of his femur where it fits into his hip, a compound break in his ankle, and broken bones in both feet. He will need at least three more surgeries in the next week.
Nicole's injuries include two broken wrists, a fractured sternum, a fractured pelvis, and a broken knee, foot and toe. Many of you know that Nicole was recovering from two major surgeries on her back for cauda equina syndrome and was not yet completely healed and mobile.
Because of Nicole's surgery in October, the family had already been forced to adjust their economic situation to one that included only one employed spouse. Now their physical, financial, and emotional lives are in turmoil. Stephen's surgeons estimate he will be unable to work for a year, and because of his injuries, he will never again be able to do the work he has spent his professional life doing.
Stephen and Nicole are loving and dedicated parents who will now struggle to care for, and transport their children. They will need home health care when finally released from the hospital and rehabilitation. Stephen's next paycheck will be the last income for the family for an indefinate amount of time. They will need help surviving and paying even their monthly household expenses. Any donations will help this grief stricken family worry less about the bills that are piling up, while Stephen, Nicole, and Sydney heal physically and emotionally from this life-changing event.
